How to distinguish the difference between dead mold and rotatable mold in hand-blown glassware?

Table of Contents

As for hand-blown(mouth-blown) glassware, according to the relative movement between the glass blank and the mold, it can be divided into Movable Molding (Rotatable Mold) and Fixed Molding (Dead Mold).

For the new molds, if the mold is rotatable mold then the blank glass can be rotated in the mold, if the mold is fixed molding, the blank glass cannot be rotated in the mold. It is for this reason that they have different advantages and disadvantages.

Please watch the attached video on the difference between dead mold and rotatable mold for more details below.

First, let’s take a look at the blowing process of a Rotatable Mold, the blank glass can be turned when the worker blows it.

Take a look at the production process of dead mold products, the blank glass can’t be rotated when the worker blows it.

The surface brightness and finish of the products with Movable Molding (Rotatable Mold) are better than the products with Fixed Molding (Dead Mold). Still, Movable Molding (Rotatable Mold) only can produce the products with circular cross-sections and no pattern on the surface. Although the surface brightness and finish of the products with Fixed Molding (Dead Mold) are poor, they can be blown into various special-shaped shapes and have patterns on the surface, which is an advantage that cannot be achieved by Movable Molding (Rotatable Mold).

More importantly, for dead mold products, there will be embossed mold(die-mold) and the glass will have 2 seam lines (As shown in the picture below) that cannot be removed.
